Give Through a Donor Advised Fund
A donor advised fund (DAF) lets you support your favorite causes with ease. When you contribute to a qualifying DAF, the IRS treats it as a charitable donation at the time of the gift. You then have the flexibility to recommend when and to which organizations the DAF should distribute funds.
When you recommend a gift to City Harvest through your DAF, you’ll help sustain our work, keeping our trucks on the road to rescue and deliver food to New Yorkers in need. Your support can have a lasting impact, and you can also include City Harvest in your estate planning.

Why give from your Donor Advised Fund directly on this page?
Not only is initiating your grant on this page the fastest and easiest way for you to give, but it also:
- Saves our staff time and money tracking your gift
- Makes us immediately aware that your gift was initiated
- Helps avoid lost checks, mailing delays, or gifts accidentally being submitted to the wrong organization or campaign
Alternatively, you may contact your DAF host directly to make your grant recommendation. Note that some DAFs might not notify us of your gift, so please inform Lauren Anderson at [email protected] to ensure we acknowledge your donation.
What are the main advantages of a Donor Advised Fund?
- Simplicity: the donor advised fund sponsor handles all record-keeping, disbursements, and tax receipts.
- Flexibility: timing of your tax deduction can be separate from your charitable decision-making.
- Tax-efficiency: contributions are tax-deductible, and any investment growth in the DAF is tax-free. It is also easy to donate long-term appreciated securities, eliminating capital gains taxes.
- Family legacy: a DAF is a powerful way to build or continue a tradition of family philanthropy.
What are the IRS guidelines around Donor Advised Funds?
The donor will not receive an income tax charitable deduction when a grant is made to City Harvest from a donor-advised fund since the tax benefit was already received when donating to the DAF. A grant from a DAF cannot be used to fulfill a legally enforceable pledge or result in the donor or any related party receiving more than an incidental benefit. Raffle tickets, tickets to special events, auction items, and benefits conferred in connection with the DAF grant are not permitted. This includes partial payment of a table, ticket, or sponsorship of City Harvest’s special events. For more details, consult the IRS Donor-Advised Funds Guide or your professional advisor.
